EVERYTHING I wanted from a GPS!

I have ordered a Garmin 550 for use in Iraq. This GPS does everything I want a GPS to do. It even tracks satellites indoors if you're under a thin roof and I expect it will have NO trouble maintaining at least 20m accuracy in the woods. The compass is also very accurate and I compared it to my military compass. I've seen GPS systems struggle with compass accuracy when stationary, but the Oregon 550 is worth the money even when in a car. The camera is amazing. Shots are crisp and clear, and the system lets you snap a photo (it geotags where you were standing) and then assign it to a waypoint if you want to tag something with a photo taken from a distance. The only downside is that the camera is slow to boot at times. This is only an issue when you are traveling. The device itself is rubberized and very durable. I hit him pretty hard. The screen is also remarkably well preserved. I was expecting to see my GPS screen covered in cobwebs a few times, but that just absorbs the penalty. I've heard people say it's hard to read in sunlight, but I've found that tilting the screen to the side allows the user to see it clearly even in the brightest desert sun. The touchscreen is highly customizable and very easy to use. The only complaint I might have about my Oregon 550 is that I didn't get the 550t with US topographic maps. I downloaded them and they were very easy to install but I could have saved a step by buying a 550t. All in all, the only reason I wouldn't recommend this GPS is for those who can't afford it. It's totally reliable and possibly the best GPS I've ever used. Well done Garmin!
