There is a significant problem with this device. The plastic rod that goes into the base to complete the loop slips out very easily, so you MUST make sure it's pointing up when measuring anything. This makes it really frustrating to use. I was able to compensate for this by wrapping two layers of magic tape around the dowel, but it's still not perfect. I often fall back on the simple tape measure I used to have. At the time, this seemed like a good idea. However, it accurately measures when you can secure the loop (it doesn't stretch) and while it's made of plastic, the spring-loaded retractor works just fine. I assume it will be durable as well since I don't use it much.
