I bought this fan for my desktop, it's a little bigger than I expected but still fits my desk. I leave it in first gear as that speed is enough to get the air moving straight towards me. At first speed it makes almost no discernible noise combined with the subtle background noise of the office. However, the second and third speeds make a sound of moving air, but no engine noise or whine. It's not the prettiest fan when it comes to modern style, but it's not ugly either. The top carry handle is just a piece of plastic that attaches to the fan and can be easily removed for a slightly better aesthetic. The fan, on the other hand, is excellently made and doesn't make my desk vibrate even at the highest speed. It is very durable and has a certain weight. I would recommend this fan to anyone looking for a good quality small fan; The top speed pushes a surprising amount of air for its size. I have a very large desk so it fits on my desk, but for a typical office desk this fan might be a bit big.
