I bought these for my morning walks. It might be the 20s when I go out around 7:30 in the morning. Several people said they were warm, I thought they were sweet enough so I decided to take a chance. So the most important thing is warmth. It would be what I would call a spring or fall hat, or even a bad hair day hat. My head was slightly warm but definitely not hot in my 70 degree house. From the outside it was nothing more than a thin sweater on his head. The knitwear is quite thin. In fact, I had to be careful when placing the inseam as it created unsightly bulges on my head. =) Second sizing. I have a medium to small female head, 21 inches in diameter. You measure exactly that. No rubber band or rubber band to grab the head (or hair). That would be great, except twisting the fabric at the top knot (making it into spats or a messy bun hat) kept pulling the hat back so it eventually slipped off my head. Pull it forward too much and as another reviewer said, it slips in your eyes. My husband (who says he has a BIG HEAD at 22.5 inches) also felt a little messy on his head. Overall I liked the idea, in the end I wanted a thicker fabric and a way to control the size. Returned.
