A few years ago I was looking for a way to add memory to my old Dell desktop computer. This is an Optiplex 240 with only a 37 gigabyte hard drive. There were several external drives in Office Max, but they were sold out. They gave me this Seagate 160GB for the same retail price as another one that was about half the size. I got a damn good deal that day. I am very happy with this Seagate hard drive. It's as fast as my Dell's internal drive. I got into digital photography and that's why I bought it. The drive in my Dell couldn't hold all of my photos. Since I bought this Seagate 160 external hard drive on November 21, 2006, I have used about half the space on it. I've never had to defragment it, and now it's as fast as it was when you first plugged it in. I was surprised at how easy it was to plug in and use. The first thing I did was back up a drive on my old Frankie computer. It's short for Frankenstein because it's made from many different parts of old, discarded computers. It got to the point where it couldn't be updated anymore, so I picked up this old Dell. All I had to do to backup his hard drive was plug the Seagate hard drive into a high-speed USB port and drag and drop to backup and keep what I wanted. I had to buy an extra card with 4 or 5 USB 2.0 ports and put it in this old Dell to connect the Seagate hard drive because the scanner, printer, digital camera and my iPod all need high speed USB 2.0 ports. But it didn't matter much. It has been working flawlessly for over 2 years now and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an external drive. After reading a one star review on it, I have to admit that I couldn't save everything on it. That's the first thing I'll do when I'm done with this. Not that I have a problem with that! But just in case and don't lose all your photo work. I don't know how it compares to other external drives. But for me I'm happy with that. It takes up very little space on my desk due to its stability. It's nice and quiet, and most of the time I don't even notice him sitting there.
