I have no idea how many cars it can hold (much can I tell) but it's basically just fabric-covered cardboard and not really hard. The sides buckled when we filled the container halfway, making it impossible to hold the lid. My son loves that he can transport SOME cars in it and then unpack it to use as a race track.
