This is the first iron I have ever owned and I have been using it for about a month. There is a small notch near where the cord comes out of the base of the iron where you can see the line next to the screw. Place your thumbnail on each side and pull down so you can "open" the iron. It's quite small but I don't need a bigger size. It heats up very quickly and keeps a constant temperature (after 2 minutes). After turning it off and unplugging it, I sometimes want to walk around with "residual heat" and notice that it also cools down pretty quickly (switches off after 2-3 minutes). My hair is very thick so I have to work with it in small sections but I haven't caused any damage to my hair (I also use Tresemme heat protectant). I will update just in case.
