There is an easy way to cut spirals or "ropes" with a milling machine, using an obsolete device called a milling master. With this cutter he could carve spirals in wood. Some grinding was required, but the milling job was as easy as turning a crank. The device cuts spirals at an angle of multiples of 15 degrees. The maximum bearing size is 3 x 36 inches. I have found that Amana Tool is the only company that sells these center cutting inserts. A 3/16" radius creates spirals about 3/8" wide. Of course the tip is fragile so don't drop it. The part of the wood that will have spirals can be rounded on a conventional lathe or first smoothed with a suitable straight router using a milling machine.
