So I'm pretty much an old school mom at heart. My son needed good walking shoes since he started walking. The leather on the shoes are real. I wish the upper leather was the same kind of leather used around the shoe. It is very soft and wrinkles up really quick. Other than that an AWESOME shoe. My son never had any issues with ankle or leg cuts. With these type of shoes the child should ALWAYS wear long socks. The shoes are thigh around the ankle because the child is learning to walk and needs support. So yes if the child doesn't have long sock on that would go over the shoe line, I can imagine that this would happen.
