So close but too far

I've been using a lot of SSD enclosures lately, both to quickly add additional storage and to remove primary drives from the board. Having never used this brand before, my expectations were low. However, when I pulled the product box out of the packaging box, my expectations skyrocketed. The product comes in a quality box with a magnetic closure, clear inner packaging, a separate warranty card and a fully readable user label. Management. Such things are not typical these days. Regardless of the quality of the actual product, there seems to be a race to the bottom when it comes to consumer-friendly packaging. I couldn't help but think that the product itself could reflect the thought and resources that went into the packaging. Unfortunately it isn't. This is a kind of big hat, not a livestock situation. First let me say that the drive is working fine. If it was a $11-15 case I think it would be 5 stars for price and performance. But at the time of writing, this case isn't even worth eleven bucks. Yes, it transmits data. But there are a few downsides. First, cooling holes can have more form than function. The aluminum shell itself would dissipate a lot of heat to cool the disc, and the holes could sort of expose the disc to the elements. It looked neat, but once I looked at them and thought about it, the novelty of the holes evaporated pretty quickly. The second issue is that they've dimmed the LED display and placed it under a relatively large curved case. The effect is that it's hard to see, but completely dark. But there are some disadvantages here too. First, the easiest way to install some drives is to completely remove the outer shell. If little care is taken in re-tightening the shell, it can be slid back and slid all the way to the closed position, except it just kind of latched. Поскольку он скользит в обратном направлении так плавно и, кажется, надежно фиксируется на месте, если его не дергать для проверки, возникает ситуация, в которой пользователь может подумать, что корпус закреплен, но на самом деле это не так ... такой пользователь, like me. ...who exactly did that. A better design would be to make the shell truly reversible so that it can be securely locked in the closed position from either direction, or have a small ledge or protrusion at the bottom of the shell to prevent it from installing backwards becomes. Overall, I think the form in this case was perhaps too focused on functionality at the expense of functionality. If the added expense of super nice packaging were redirected to a brighter activity LED and a groove that would allow the case to be reversed (or made strictly irreversible) perhaps this could be a five star product. In the current form - at least at the current price - I think there are more functional alternatives for the same price or even cheaper.

Pros
  • NVMe SSD Enclosure Compatibility
Cons
  • Hard to tell
