Review on HighPoint Rocket 640L Lite - 4-Port PCI-E 2.0 x4 SATA 6Gb/s RAID Controller by Jimmy Garcia

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Works great, but only with the right driver. Not for XP owners.

At first I thought I bought a lemon. My Win XP Pro machine refused to work with it and the MoBo SATA2 controller couldn't see my SSD drive. Tech support tells me that XP lacks the necessary AHCI support needed for the R640L card and SSD combo. Frustrating, but I decided to revert my Linux computer (failed experiment) back to Windows (continued failed experiment, but more useful). I installed Win 7 Pro and was frustrated again with a broken controller and invisible SSD. After repeated slow communication with the technical support website, it was discovered that the wrong installation disk was included with the product. The RR64xl driver was for the RAID card, not the R640L SATA3 controller. The correct Windows controller driver is located at .highpoint-tech.com/BIOS_Driver/R640L/Win/win_driver_1.2.0.1019.zip. Once I had the right driver, everything worked like magic. The card and the SSD came in handy straight away. I remapped the SSD as bootable, restarted Win 7 with no issues, and got a much faster computer. The test software showed that the SSD throughput exceeds 250 MB/s, which is about five times higher than the average for a legacy hard drive. It doesn't meet the SATA3 ceilings, but I can't tell right away if it's a 240GB MyDigital SSD, a 6-year-old MoBo with a 2.4GHz processor, DDR2 RAM, an R640L controller board or something else acts combination. of all 5. I am glad that I received the money despite the incorrectly packaged installation disk. This saved me from having to replace the mobo, which would also mean new RAM, a new CPU, a new graphics card, and worse, a headache reinstalling. Addendum: If you need tech support (anywhere), it motivates you to know (or think) you got it. by Raven. You know (or believe) that you can easily return an item.
