Gotta Love The Handle

We live in hot and humid Southwest Florida where summer is almost eternal and plants and trees grow year round. I do all my gardening myself which includes mowing 3 acres of lawn and cutting, trimming and thinning out various plants and trees. In addition, we have another acre of wetlands that require mangrove pruning twice a year and constant vigilance to eradicate Brazilian pepper trees and other invasive plants. Proper maintenance of all my gear is important to prevent rust and to keep a good blade on my cutting tools. . Since I've been doing this myself for about 30 years, I've accumulated not only a bunch of tools (both manual and motorized), but also several different sharpeners. I don't think I can count (and in some cases even find) all the cutting tools I have. These include lawn mowers, brush cutters, machetes, axes and hatchets, chainsaws, pruning shears and saws, knives, secateurs, pruning shears, shovels, rakes and hoes. outdoor tasks. I probably have about 20 machetes of different weights, blade lengths, and types of steel that can be used for specific tasks. Sharpening a machete can be dangerous, and from time to time I get hit or cut while holding a file. But this Stanley Mill 8-inch bastard file has a great grip that keeps my fingers off the blades. It's also especially useful when reaching under a zero-radius lawn mower to sharpen three blades. The handle gives you extra leverage when sharpening and also allows you to approach each blade at the right angle. Sharp blades provide a clean and efficient cut, which is very important when mowing dense lawns. Although I do have several whetstones , I found this Mil Bastard Easily handles most of my essential tasks. If I could only have one sharpener, this would be it.
