I use kitchen towels instead of sponges because they are easier to keep clean and more versatile. I have a teenager in the house who randomly wipes EVERYTHING with my white kitchen rags. These rags seem to hold up to regular bleaching and dry quickly by hanging over a faucet so they never smell. If they eventually get so dirty that the bleach won't help, I don't feel bad about sending them to the shop for dirtier jobs or just throwing them away since the price is so cheap. They absorb some moisture - if you squeeze them all the way they absorb more liquid, but I like that they dry quickly. That's the compromise that works for me.
