At $64 this little unit is pretty amazing. It's solidly built, heavy for its size, and has surprisingly solid front-panel controls. The toggle buttons are well made and secure. They are firmly "locked" in their position when switched on and off. The volume knob is also solid, with small "notches" for each turn of the knob, keeping each adjustment securely in place. There's even a tiny green light to indicate the device has successfully received the incoming digital stream. It works perfectly. I use both optical and coaxial inputs for music, as well as a USB input from my computer. The unit will snap quickly and securely to anyone selected by the input switch on the front panel. I use it exclusively for headphones and haven't tried its analogue RCA outputs on the back. As a headphone amplifier, the sound is quite decent. No, this is not a high quality DAC and will never make you think otherwise. There is nothing extraordinary about his sound. And it's a bit rough compared to a more advanced DAC. However, what makes it incredible for the money is that there's obviously nothing wrong with its sound. It's not light and harsh; it is not thin and brittle; it is not dark and soft; it's not hard or tough. Rather, it is clean undistorted, full and quite dynamic. For reference I used high quality digital cables which cost many times more than this little DAC. I also connected it to a quality air conditioner. A testament to its ability is that I can clearly hear incremental improvements with expensive cables and power filters. And I found them important to get good results from this device. Overall, FX Audio's headphone DAC is more than audible, performs exactly as it should and sounds better than we can reasonably expect at this price point. They even include a high-quality USB cable! It's really cool for the money.
