Calipers are used for a variety of purposes. A job for machinists who think in thousandths of an inch, or for potters who often compare inside and outside diameters and need a tool that doesn't mess with water or mud. The Osborne tool is excellent for my use, which transfers dimensions from models to final sculpts. It has lots of steel machined to tight tolerances. This set is particularly good because it opens and closes freely, then snaps instantly and securely, and finally gives in. The ability to fine-tune with your thumb is certainly strong enough to withstand small bumps. The 6" is fine for most things I make, but I keep my 4" Starrett and 12" No-Name alongside it.
