Rotary table Angular resolution and gear play

On August 20th, 2019 I wrote the following question to the manufacturer. Unfortunately, the answers I received were nonsensical, so I'll answer them here. Questions: AT-2 Laser Level Adapter: Approximately how many turns of the knob does it take to rotate the stage 90 degrees? How much play does the pivot screw have? Answers: Forward stroke: 32.2 turns of the handle 90 degrees, or 2.795 degrees per turn; and play about 1/10 of a turn. More details. I set up the revolving stage on a tripod in my garden. I set up a Johnson Model 40-6648 on the stage and then projected a 90 degree perpendicular line onto the edge of the fence 40 feet away. I then turned the knob to rotate the scene to project the vertical of the cross onto the same edge of the fence. This required 32.2 turns of the handle, so 90 degrees / 32.2 = 2.795 degrees / full turn. The stylus is made of a soft, rubber-like material with 30 even indentations around the grip, making it easy to mark every 5 indentations with a silver marker and even measuring less than a full turn of the stylus. Specifically, 2.795 degrees/30 knurls = 0.0932 degrees/knurls. Backlash refers to the lack of motion when changing the direction of rotation, judging by the movement of the laser line (which is very easy to see in the dark). The backlash is 3-4 rolls on the handle, or about 1/3 degree. If you are careful to avoid backlash, the stage will repeat with an accuracy of a fraction of the turn of the handle, or less than 0.1 degrees. Conclusion: For the price, this stage exceeds my expectations and is a winner.

Pros
  • Great price
Cons
  • Big and clumsy
