Review on GearIT 12AWG Braided Speaker Wire (10ft) with Dual Gold Plated Banana Plugs - Heavy Duty, Oxygen-Free Copper (OFC) Black Construction by Ron Coleman

Revainrating 5 out of 5

I only use high quality Gear IT electronics and high quality cables.

I purchased "Gear IT" brand speaker cable as a temporary solution until I could get into my locker to store $1500 McIntosh cables and $300 Emotiva cables, which I kept with the electronics when we got the new carpet I use 2 pairs of McIntosh XRT-22 line array speakers front and back, I coupled the fronts to a McIntosh banana to route the cables and the Backs are where I used Gear speaker cables. I have a live microphone in my listening room. I was hardwired to a DBX spectrum analyzer when I first hooked up the cheap cables. I wasn't expecting much, so I didn't turn on the spectrum analyzer the first time. After a few songs I started doing A/B testing, with the front and back being driven by my 2 channel preamp, the backs getting exactly the same signal as the fronts while I was doing the A/B testing Running through this I thought the "Gear" wires sounded good with slightly higher levels than the McIntosh cables on the fronts, I plugged in the DBX and started the series. I ran A/B tests and looked at the display for differences in speaker performance that would appear if the speakers behaved differently than another matched pair. Absolutely no difference in speaker response ie sound, that's when I realized that Gear brand cables, which cost me $45, sounded the same as McIntosh cables, which I paid $3000 for. I was shocked when I brought all my electronics and cables home, I tested my McIntosh brand Emotiva cables at #1 and saw a slight increase in "transient spikes" from the Emotiva wires. I attributed it to the fact that the Emotiva wires are 2 completely separate banana to 1 speaker wire ends and spades on the other ends, giving 2 points of contact to the amp and 2 points of contact to the speaker, McIntosh cables only have 3 Contact points, 2 on the speaker and 1 on the amp, then I did A/B testing on a pair of cables with banana type connectors and for dual Em otiva cables the results were the same, 2 separate pairs of cables slightly outperforming a single pair of Gear IT- Branded cables with slightly increased transient peaks. I liked Gear IT's cables so much that I ordered a second 25ft cable. A pair I should be getting Tuesday is my plan to make a true 2 wire cable using 2 pairs of gear wires to 1 pair of speakers. I'm planning on adding 1 pair to the woofers and the 2 Once I've run my 2 pairs of Emotiva cables, if I see the same increase in transient spikes on the DBX analyzer I'll add 2 more pairs of 25ft banana plug cables purchase to create true double wiring of both pairs of speakers. I will also be ordering 3 pairs of Gear IT branded 10ft cables which will allow me to make true Tri-Wire McIntosh XRT-28 line arrays in my 2 channel system. I will be using banana plugs on 4 woofers. Bananas for 52 midrange and bananas for 26 tweeters, for a monobloc MP I use 2 pairs of spade grommets tightened under the speaker terminal, then the 3rd wire is connected to a banana plug and directly to the terminals of each amp. $22 per speaker Gear IT brand speaker cables aren't as high quality as my McIntosh speaker cables, which cost me $1500 per speaker, but they're not junk either. The only issue I see is Gear IT brand cables that don't have heat shrink tubing on banana plugs where the sleeve can be unscrewed. from the cable I order some heat shrink tubing to put 6 inch pieces on top of each banana and spade connector. Feel free to buy any speaker cable you need from Gear IT, they are great cables with excellent build quality.
