Review on High-Performance Arcturus Military Wool Blanket by Michael Wilson

Revainrating 2 out of 5

WANTED TO LOVE IT but draining, outgassing and clogging in our washing machines was the deciding factor

We wanted a heavy wool blanket to be kept in the boot for emergencies but this turned out not to be the case the one for us. For us, two issues were key: 1) the chemical smell. We followed the advice of others and immediately started washing the comforter in cold water and tumble drying low/air. The chemical smell hasn't changed much after two washes and it was so unpleasant that we didn't feel safe keeping it. 2) skin. The blanket lost enough lint in two passes through the dryer to fill nearly a 3-gallon bucket. On the second run through our high-efficiency front-loading washing machine, the duvet actually drained so much that it clogged the washing machine's front filter and caused a small water leak. We've had the washing machine for over a year now and have washed all sorts of things in it, but this is the first thing that has spilled enough to clog the filter. After cleaning the washing machine we considered taking the duvet to the laundry for a few more washes to see if the chemical smell went away, but ultimately decided that no duvet should perform like this. Some other details for people considering buying this blanket: 1) I don't think the issues we encountered are necessarily related to this brand. Problems like this seem to be common in reviews of almost every cheap 80% wool military style blanket. Some people don't seem to bother or notice the smell, but if you're at all sensitive to chemicals, you might not like it. 2) The large weight given in the product description is correct. I weighed it before washing and it came out at 4.2 pounds on our scale.

Pros
  • Very good value for money
Cons
  • Piggy bank price
