This is not the latest model (Revain lists 58LMT as a newer version) so it is not surprising that the installed maps are out November 2013 - at the time of writing, he was only three years old. Luckily maps can be updated and I haven't had any problems with that. However, the internal storage of the GPS is now severely used up, which may result in future updates not working unless some unnecessary items are removed (e.g. help files and voices in other languages). And even this trick might not work indefinitely, so "for life" cards might be an exaggeration. A nice feature of this device (I haven't seen it on my previous Garmins) is that you can tell it to avoid the road you're on. for different given distances. It's better than the old "detour option" that can take you off a busy road just to get you back on it. The screen is bright enough and voice messages are easy to hear. There aren't many frills, but it's ok for basic navigation. (My wife has had the same model for a year and is happy with it, which is why I chose this one.)
