First I want to say that NO, YOU CAN'T do it horizontally. By default it should be vertical. If you want it to be vertical I think it's a smart little system that's solid enough. Not very strong, don't put a bunch of detergent bottles in the top box, but it would be fine for shirts or something. I needed mine under the table and prayed it would be horizontal. Couldn't, but well, it wasn't advertised as such so I just decided not to use the lids at all and turned the cubes on their backs. Works very well for my socks.
