I bought a touchless trash can and it came with one of those carbon filters. Didn't really think about a filter as I had flip top bins and unused filters. I had the container for about 6 months when I noticed it was starting to smell bad. When I removed the charcoal filter it stunk so I think it absorbed a lot of smells. I threw it away and ordered a few replacements to see if that would help. While waiting for the filters I found that the trash still smelled so it wasn't just that the filter was stopping the smell and I felt that. I haven't had a problem since installing the new filters and I think each one lasts around 4-5 months.
