The noise level is no higher than our dishwasher or washing machine, so this is not a problem for my family. It's a great machine, but it has a large footprint. Even if you don't have space, make room for this food dehydrator. It's so fast you don't even have to rotate the trays during the process, it's so beautiful. There was too much basil growing in our garden. We filled the bowls three times until everything was dry and even, dried quickly and easily. We also made apple chips and strawberry chips. We then made several batches of fruit trays and did not spray the trays with no-stick spray as directed. The skin of the fruit peels off easily, so this step isn't necessary (although the instructions say it should be done). We recently made jerky and I was amazed at how quickly it dries (about 4.5 hours). I have recommended this to anyone asking about my dehydration. I have no complaints and have run this machine overnight with no overheating, melting, etc.
