Read this before ordering!

This gas cap fitted my 2003 Toyota 4Runner perfectly, but not without problems. My engine light and the VSS warning light on the dash also came on. The first thing I tried was tightening the existing gas cap and resetting the dash lights. It did not work. Next I decided to buy a new gas cap. I used the Part Fit Checker at the top of this page to select which gas cap to purchase. The Part Fit Checker gave me the wrong part number which I ordered and returned. Here's what I learned about Toyota gas caps. Basically there are two types. 1) The one shown here has tabs on the side of the cap and 2) a threaded cap (Toyota Genuine Gas Cap (77300-06040) assembly). There may be more types, but I have two different Toyotas and each has its own cap. BEFORE YOU ORDER, CHECK YOUR FUEL CAP TO DETERMINE WHAT YOUR VEHICLE REALLY HAS AND ORDER FOR IT, NOT BY PARTS. The second case I received (77300-47010) is of good quality and fits perfectly. I installed the cover and drove about 20 miles but the warning lights on the dash would not go out. I then removed the positive terminal from the battery for about 1 minute, reconnected and started the car. The light went out and the problem was solved. I have a second Toyota car and it has a threaded screw cap.
