I used to love ASUS routers. I bought this to replace an RT-N66U that worked great. I just wanted to check out ASUS' latest and greatest flagship router, so I updated it. BIG MISTAKE. The RT-AC87U is almost twice the size of the RT-N66U, and while I expected it to be larger, I was still surprised by how much larger it is. The firmware is familiar, with some additional features, but for this model it is very buggy. I mainly use Apple devices and it seemed like every time an Apple update came out the wifi got really bad until a few weeks later ASUS released a firmware update to fix the change. The 5GHz band was particularly bad and mostly unusable. When it worked, it was for a short period of time (an hour or so at most) and then the speed dropped to less than 1Mbps. I replaced the first block hoping it was just bad, but the second block behaved yourself as well. ASUS support was absolutely unhelpful and although they initially responded to me within 24 hours, they completely ignored my responses thereafter. I hate being a conspiracy theorist, but my previous relationship with ASUS Support was generally pretty positive. The sudden lack of support for issues related to this model makes me wonder if they are aware that it contains bugs and are using the "ignore it and it will be gone" approach.
