Review on Suunto Spartan Sport Wrist HR Tracker by Brandon Addison

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Very pretty but not very deep

Liked: I haven't mastered all the useful features yet, but first what I like. I love the look of the watch, I was looking for a casual all day watch. I can log my runs, track my hike via GPS, and then wear it to a gourmet dinner to maintain my daily activity volume. It's a little big, but if you want the best features and good battery life, you'll have to make compromises. The GPS is way faster than my Garmin Vivosmart HR (one of the reasons I switched to a new watch was that the GPS finally turned on AFTER I finished my run). The dials are nice, it would be nice to have a bit more customization or at least more variations. I used weightlifting (HR track for indoor climbing as the GPS wasn't working), running and hiking. Didn't use swimming, cycling etc. Runs pretty good and what I need. Dislikes: Labels can't be changed (yet?). I don't know why but I can't change the shortcuts to something useful. Going through 3 menus to activate the compass is a bit of a hassle, but I want it to be instant as most of the time I just need to glance at it to figure out where north is. And the current shortcuts are things I would/should never use as shortcuts. I hope they do a software update to allow for the change. The battery is good but seems to last a maximum of 3 days with the heart rate monitor on. The included continuous heart rate monitor is obviously a big drain on the battery. I've been told this watch could last around 10 days, but that might be due to the annoying naming scheme that causes so much confusion (Spartan Sport HR Baro vs Non HR vs Non Baro vs etc etc) so that I'll drop to 67% for THOSE specific hours after a full day of just working with HR and looking at notifications on my watch. Also, for some reason I'm not getting calls on my watch even though I've allowed the notification. I don't know if the user manual is sparse because it's still in development or if the software needs updating, but I feel like I'm losing a lot of utility with this watch. All in all, if this watch doesn't look quite nice, I might reconsider (if they don't update the software).
