Not as sturdy as it looks

The wood is very soft. I thought I might break it if I screwed the pieces in too hard. The photo makes it look like it would be more sturdy. The shelf is also loosely in place. We have a lab and he can be a vigorous eater with his bowl on the floor (depending on what we feed him). However, I will say this has held up so far (it's only been about a week).
