We live in LBI and go to the beach quite often. I bought a Wonder Wheeler with narrow wheels 5 years ago. Climbed up the sand dunes with difficulty. Then two years ago I bought one with wider wheels. Still fighting with the sand dunes. I decided to bite the bullet and invest in what I hope is the latest and greatest iteration of this beach wagon. I received the kit a week ago and inflated the tires first (3 PSI max). I removed the old wheels and shaft from the wagon. I replaced the shaft with a new one and installed the washers, bushings, snap ring and wheels as directed. After installation, I didn't like how far the shaft protruded beyond the wheels. I looked at the bushings that came with it versus the bushings I removed from the old shaft. The new bushings are just PVC tubing and have an ID hole that is too big for the 3/8 shaft resulting in a sloppy fit. The old bushings were longer and fit better on the shaft. I took apart what I was doing and installed the old plastic bushings (blue in the picture with the two ODs shown) and reassembled them. Now the shaft is only about 1/2 extended beyond the snap ring. I thought of covering the end with plastic protection for safety, but then I thought of snap rings on the end of each shaft. They hold everything together but are only held in place by a hex head screw that cuts into the shaft when tightened. I considered drilling through each end of the stock and placing a cotter pin next to the collar, but I still leave the raw end of the stock exposed for someone to trip over the ankle. I solved both potential problems by buying 3/8 metal end caps and tapping them with a soft mallet. On the outside you can see the ring with its hexagonal screw and the cap. It holds the ring in place if it comes loose and covers the unfinished end of the shank for a better look. I like the wider stance of the car and hope the tires will hold air for a long time. This is a simple transformation. Not cheap but I have to believe it will be a big improvement! As a side note, I also lengthened the handles on my cart so your arms don't stretch backwards when you pull. I cut a broom handle out of metal and attached it to the existing handle and attached bicycle grips to the ends. Now it can be pulled like a rickshaw while standing between the handles. Much easier. I'll update this when I use it in the real world. The summer comes! Updated 8/3/19. It was the best thing I could do with this car. I can even slide it up and down the entrance/exit to the beach, which I find easier than pulling. Just lift the front wheels out of the sand. The same applies to driving up and down curbs. I was often asked where I got the trolley/wheels etc. from. No regret!
