I have an old house with central heating but no central air conditioning. Because of this, there are long periods in the house without a regular flow of air through the duct. I had a couple of small mice dying in the vents and suddenly the smell coming out of the vents was awful even when I tried to close the vents. I placed one in each room where the ventilation came from the dead mouse area and one at the bottom of my stairs leading to the 2nd floor of the house (the upstairs portable air conditioner removed a lot of the noise). They made my house bearable until I cleared the air ducts and I will continue to use them in the future.
