My cat cut his lower armpit/elbow with broken glass and needed stitches. She hated the plastic cone the vet had put her in to prevent her from licking the wound and refused to move. She could barely keep her head up and hit the walls. We also tried a softer cone called "comfortable cone" and she still had a cat cone coma. We were hesitant to try it because I wasn't sure if she could raise her hand to lick it or if she could take it off, but it works great! We have a small one, she's about 11 pounds, but she has a thinner neck. We can blow it harder to make it tighter and she won't be able to take the collar off. She can actually walk/eat/drink and go to the litter box with him. Of course she would prefer not to wear a collar but she likes it a thousand times more and she looks very cute and ready to go :)
