They work very well! Please note that the wicks are packed separately in a box (see my photo). And the shiny silver side of the disc should go up and the cork side down onto the vegetable oil. (I wonder if some of the bad reviews are because people don't understand that?) I poured some water into a glass, added a few drops of blue food coloring, and then poured in about an inch of canola vegetable oil. I also dipped the wick in the oil before inserting the wick into the tiny disc, about 1/3 of the wick above the disc and 2/3 of the wick below the disc. Then I put the disc on the oil and lit it with a match. Nice!
