I use it as a system for sale. It is best to use one of the polyester cartridges in combination with an activated carbon filter. I have a well, and after moving into this new house with no filter, I had problems with the ice maker, washing machine, and dishwasher due to sand and silt being pushed through by the pump. So expensive to repair and replace. We also had to unclog seven faucets throughout the house. 30 microns clean heavy mud and sand, and a carbon filter improves the taste of hard water. So yes you do need two built in filters but you will save wear and tear on all your equipment and save big bucks on bottled water for coffee and drinking. Activated charcoal removes odors and bacteria from water and greatly improves its taste. PS uses 4 1/2" filters, they also last longer than 2 5/8" filters. You will not regret it.
