Review on GRA SPRM Heavy Antenna Spring Stainless by Charles Ahmar

Revainrating 2 out of 5

The central conductive wire is severed when the spring is flexed.

Many mobile ham radio antennas come with a PL259-SO239 UHF fitting with no built in shock spring. This spring seemed to provide the necessary flexibility for a mobile application while maintaining a good foundation. Everything looked fine at first, but after the antenna was shortened to tune it to a good SWR with the added spring, the spring failed as the center conductive wire came loose at the first bend. I suspected the original spring had a defective mount, so I took the convenience of a Revain replacement just to repeat the same thing. Now I need to replace my antenna - since I shortened it, it no longer has an acceptable SWR without an additional spring. This spring is a good idea, but it doesn't serve its intended purpose due to poor/weak construction.

Pros
  • This is great
Cons
  • Some bugs

Center conducting cable detaches when the spring bends.
