Given that the 4.7 liter V-8 engine in my 2003 Dodge Durango suffers from "rough idle" and weird interference on the freeway at times , internet research has shown that TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) and IAC (Idle Air Control) can be faulty. Considering the car has done over 100,000 miles and both are electromechanical devices I thought it would be a good idea to replace them. I cleaned the throttle body at the time of the change and attached a picture of the old IAC, as you can see it has carbon deposits on it - didn't really know the carbon went back into the fuel tank ok. thing to learn. The IAC is easy to remove and easy to install, although you have to insert it into the throttle body it keeps trying to get out as you insert it, luckily a (single) mounting screw is long. By the way, this requires a Torx 20 key, do not try to use a hex screwdriver or any other tool, you can ruin the head. I didn't remove the throttle body, although technically I should have to clean it completely front and rear. Call me a coward, I don't want to do things that can break other things since I'm not an expert on cars, V-8s and whatnot. After these two changes, my idle, around 600rpm with the engine warm, is slightly higher than before, but I did an ECU reset after installation to make sure the ECU was reading the new components and not thinking it was is silent spoke to the old departments. I have diagnostic software that reads the ECU through the OBDII connector and I had this when I reconnected the battery, a good way to make sure you don't break anything fiddling with the connectors but as it is takes some time for the ecu to relearn the engine , need to come back here in a few weeks (end of April) to see the final results. I replaced the IAC at the same time as the original engine management 99058 throttle valve sensor (details!), so far no more rough idling, no more hesitation when starting off with a cold engine, the hiccups are gone and the error codes are gone.
