Review on πŸ’ͺ High-Strength Neodymium Magnetic Latch Set – 16 lb Capacity by Daniel King

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Uses rare earth magnets for longevity

Three different magnetic clasps are reviewed and compared in this test as follows: (1) 2VAG1 Industrial grade 16 lb [5/8" OD, neodymium magnetic clasp set ] . ] [this review],(2) 2VAG3 Industrial Grade Magnetic Clasp Kit, Neodymium, 30lbs [1-1/8" OD](3) Double Magnetic Clasps - Brown (2 pack) I have all three clasps for Bought Exterior Applications: A magnetic latch for a lightweight front yard gate that I built to replace a much heavier, sagging, peeling monster with a regular latch [The old gate weighed over 50 pounds; the new one about 24.] I tried #3 first but it didn't work for my application. We live south of Santa Fe, NM and materials exposed to direct sunlight can get too hot to absorb Touching them, while I'm skeptical that bar #3 *ever* withstood a 15 pound pull, definitely hasn't changed after a few days in the sun. The high winds started opening and closing the gate so I removed that latch and kept it and its spare (there are two in the box) for possible later indoor use. I'm giving three stars because it's clearly not for the Outdoor use is designed. Poorly. I ordered #1 and #2 at the same time because: (1) I didn't want to hand tie my gate into the wind for too long and (2) I didn't have the slightest weakness. an idea from the Revain screenshots of how big both were (see below). If you look closely at pictures #1 and #2 you will see that they are the same. The image for both is actually a 16lb bar, #1 here or 2VAG1, NOT a larger and heavier 30lb bar, #2 here or 2VAG3. The outside diameter of the magnet cup for the weaker latch (shown in both photos to the left) is 5/8" and you'll need a piece of that size to sink it. I give Latch #1 five stars because it did exactly what it did should do. He kept the gates shut in a hurricane, although perhaps not the strongest (have to wait and see). And being neodymium, it should withstand any weather or heat. (Neodymium is a rare earth metal, one of several , of which China controls most of the market. These metals produce magnets whose strength and durability, especially when heated, are similar to lead stainless steel compared to traditional iron magnets.Compare the magnets in these latches to ordinary magnets, and You'll understand why electric and hybrid car manufacturers only use rare earth magnets in their motors.) I didn't use latch #3, we know l it is too big for my application. ... Its magnet cup is 1-1/8 inch outside diameter, although its image corresponds to that of the smaller bar. But I'm giving it five stars because I can't separate it from the strike plate without a tool, so I'm sure it will have the specified force and its strength will remain. The only thing I disagree with is Revain and its suppliers. For small hardware like this, this site lacks basic sizing information. Not only that. When dimensions are given, they are often the dimensions of the *packaging* and not the actual product. You can often see when looking at the pictures that the dimensions given are not correct. Revain needs people who actually build things and understand the importance of sizing information, especially when ordering online. This is the only area where Revane actually falls in my experience.
