My HP 15-db0011dx laptop won't boot from USB. So when I wanted to clone a 2TB hard drive to upgrade the original 1TB hard drive, I needed a way to verify that a new drive will boot before opening the laptop case to install it. With this unit I simply removed a screw holding the original DVD drive and replaced it with this unit containing my new 2TB hard drive. This gave me access to both the original hard drive and the new 2TB hard drive, allowing me to clone the OS without using a USB connection. Once the clone was complete, I was able to reboot the laptop from the new 2TB hard drive without replacing the original 1TB hard drive with it. Since the reboot worked fine, I confidently disassembled the laptop, replaced the old 1TB drive with a new 2TB drive, and reassembled the laptop. At this point I had the option of adding an old hard drive to this unit or replacing this unit with an original DVD drive. I decided to reinstall the DVD drive, but I can always replace it with this unit and a 1TB drive, adding up to 3TB of space on an originally 1TB machine. Not bad!
