I tried it on a large apple with skin on. First I had to push hard and swing it in different directions so that it crashed into the apple first. Once I had a solid cut, I was able to push hard, but not as hard as when I first started, and it cut right through. However, he did not cut through the apple at the bottom. So I had to pull the core out of the hole, snap off the wedges and leave the bottom skin attached to the slicer. Maybe if I turn it upside down and use something (an oven mitt, a very large spoon, a block of wood?) to push it all the way through? I think it would be a lot easier if I peeled the apple first. I got this to use a fruit grinder to make and press apple juice. In no case do I want to crush or crush the peel - there may be a bitter aftertaste. I never thought that the small hole in the middle would be big enough for the whole core, but it was. There were a few small pieces of seed left on the wedges but they just fell off. This plane is made from very strong metal, very good quality although nothing to compare - never used.
