Glutamine for Gut Health (and Stress Relief)

L-Glutamine's role in the gut is multifaceted. Perhaps most importantly, glutamine can be digested directly in the gut. For those of you concerned about increased gut permeability, it plays an important role in restoring/maintaining gut function. In addition, glutamine is the precursor to glutathione, the main enzyme that regenerates all your stress enzymes. The problem is that during times of great stress or injury, your body's uptake of glutamine far exceeds any normal supply. For this reason, doctors and other authorities recommend 2 to 3 grams of glutamine per day for almost all intestinal disorders. The protocol was given to me by my new functional medicine doctor. I saw her about 3 weeks ago for a bowel condition that could be candida and leaky gut. Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic that fights intestinal inflammation. I used Jarrow's S. boulardii. PGX is a form of glucomannan that has been specially processed to preserve fiber quality. take 3 times a day. About 3 g of glutamine per day. I prefer to dissolve it in about 2 cups of water and take it to bed with me. When I wake up in the middle of the night, I drink it all up. Best taken on an empty stomach. When my stomach was at its worst, I often just doubled that dose of glutamine. However, don't do this regularly. Glutamine is involved in the production of GABA, and changes in GABA levels can alter your mood. I noticed pain relief the very next day when I doubled the dose of glutamine. Bob's Red Mill Unmodified Potato Starch is a resistant starch. Resistant starches resist digestion, are broken down by your probiotics, and don't raise your glucose levels. Resistant starches directly nourish the intestines and have an anti-inflammatory effect. Dissolve 1 tablespoon in water up to three times a day. Collagen: Your gut needs collagen to heal. You can get collagen by drinking bone broth or taking collagen supplements. Vitamins: The truth is, if you're going to heal from a serious injury, you need all of your vitamins. So you need a good multivitamin. The problem is that most of the vitamins out there, centrum, are lousy vitamins for a day. they are simply not bioavailable. Getting a good multivitamin is quite difficult, many vitamins cannot be absorbed unless they are in just the right proportion, while others completely block absorption of one vitamin or mineral. Just make sure you're getting enough magnesium and zinc. The two main minerals are fairly bioavailable in most forms. You must study this matter carefully. Initiating Protein Synthesis: Healing, by definition, is the production of new proteins to replace those that are damaged or missing. You need to eat 30g of protein in one sitting to initiate protein synthesis. Nutritionists recommend doing this at least three times a day when trying to recover from a serious injury or illness. 30g of protein is quite a lot. Five large eggs contain 30 g of protein. I have a hard time eating that much in one sitting, so I usually eat all of the protein I normally eat in a day and concentrate it in one meal. I eat all other foods, vegetables etc. with my other meals. Digestive Support: Symptoms include bloating, bloating, diarrhea, stomach pain/heartburn, intestinal spasms, and GERD. Physician. If it turns out you don't need it, you can burn a hole in your stomach. In fact, I've been using a variant of this protocol for almost a year with somewhat limited success. But after switching to the medical option, after three weeks my digestion seemed almost normal. what were my mistakes You must take glutamine on an empty stomach. I took it all day but apparently my stomach wasn't empty enough. I used very crappy fiber. Metamucil is not a very good thing. Bad fiber feeds your probiotics, yes, but it also feeds other less desirable organisms in your gut. The difference between Metamucil and PGX is a separate universe. I used too many probiotics. Yes, too many probiotics. It turns out that Saccharomyces boulardii is the go-to probiotic if you're looking to heal gut inflammation. All the other probiotics I took only competed for a very limited resource (fiber) and apparently they outnumbered Saccharomyces and it never caught on. That's all. Update: My gut seems to be mostly healed with this protocol. I recently added N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) to my line. NAC is primarily used to support glutathione (this is the main stress enzyme that controls the recovery of all other antioxidants/stress enzymes). I've found that I recover better from stress when I remember taking MSG. In fact, I lost about 1.5 inches from the waist but didn't lose any weight. This can only happen when my stress levels drop and my metabolism stops storing fat mostly in the waist (stress stomach). Then, as I ran out of MSG, my waist started crawling again. Now that I've received my next bottle it's starting to fall again. Glutathione Support Protocol: N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) Supplement Glutamate Supplement Magnesium Glycinate Supplement (Magnesium tends to be depleted when you are under stress. Glycinate is essential for gluthione production)
