I really liked this thermometer at first - it gave very quick readings and has two features that I consider essential for grilling - a lockout function and a light. The lock feature is very useful when you're trying to feel the meat without seeing the display. The lock feature allows you to lock the reading and then move the thermometer to a position where you can read it while still showing the temperature of the meat. The first few times I used it I was very happy with it - readings came quickly and were stable, and when tested with another $80 thermometer (which is older and slower) it reads within 1 degree. Unfortunately, the 3rd or 4th time I used the thermometer gave me wrong readings - usually 10 to 15 degrees. I panicked thinking I had completely overcooked my expensive steaks. Luckily, I found the steaks to be perfectly medium, indicating the thermometer wasn't exactly cooking. I will check the calibration and recalibrate the device. If it survives this recalibration I will update my review accordingly. But now I'm deducting two stars for the apparent inconsistency in the readings after the third use.
