I bought this to replace my current Netgear R6200 router which has been a workhorse for expanding coverage for the past 8 years. After some research (mainly Tom's guidance) I settled on this one based on the dedicated channel, the web interface and my previous experience with Netgear. This itinerary fell short of my safety expectations on two counts; 1. There is no option to disable SSID broadcast. Technical support tells me that the SSID needs to be broadcast to ensure proper signal transmission between router and satellite. It's not a big problem and I can swallow it.2. Lack of adequate access control β Allowed devices may be whitelisted to access the network. But in reality, the unknown device can still log into Wi-Fi and communicate with other devices on the same network. It just blocks an unknown device from accessing the internet. This is a major security vulnerability for me as it allows an unknown device to connect to my PC and either install an unwanted component or steal data/information. I contacted tech support and the Netgear community forum and it was confirmed that this is a spec rather than a defect. Similar issues have happened multiple times with other Netgear routers over the last 3 years and I haven't seen any information about this being fixed. By the way, my current Netgear R6200 didn't have any problems either with MAC address whitelisting or with a hidden SSID. Some may think I'm overly concerned. But to this day I have 3-4 unknown devices trying to access my WiFi every day. The current router does the job and rejects it. Some of these devices have MAC addresses that providers cannot identify. This worries me a lot and why we all need it. To be honest, after a two-day test run, it has good performance and coverage. And it should work fine if you don't need security controls like in my case. I would also like to commend the tech support for responding to me so quickly. Therefore 2 stars for the rating. I returned the product because it didn't meet my safety standards. I strongly recommend that you visit the Netgear Community Forum before purchasing any product.
