I bought this for my cat but then remembered I have a black rubber mat which I bought to put in front of his litter box. While waiting for this to arrive I put the rug back in place and it fits better in place anyway. I found this hexagonal mat so comfortable to stand on that I decided to keep it to myself when my desk is in stand-up mode. When I'm not using it, my cat loves to steal it to use as a bed. Its ability to hold particles is great just about anywhere you would put a standing mat - if your shoes have sand/dirt/debris on them most of them will sit securely on the mat where they can't spread further. If you (theoretically) eat cookies while standing over them, you might not have to sweep the floor (as much) afterwards.
