I live in a cottage by the lake in the mountains of northern New England. The house is supplied with water from the lake. Initially, it was completely unprocessed and suitable for toilets, bathing, and washing, but not drinkable. That meant buying bottled water to drink, cook, brush your teeth, etc. It wasn't a big deal until we decided to live. in the house all year round. I built a system that starts with a backwashed coarse dirt filter. Next is the Big Blue APEC fine filter, followed by this APEC carbon filter and finally the Yarma Helical UV filter for sterilization (Yarma has not yet been installed in my photos). Everything is connected to 3/4 PS 240-. a voltaic pump for a shallow well and a pressure tank. The pump and tank are about 8 to 10 feet above the water inlet, which is about 2 feet below the water. The house is about 30 feet above sea level and 160 feet from the pump. The proof of this is real experience. The pressure in the house is great! Water tastes and smells great! And tests for dissolved and other particles in the water show 6 parts per million! My neighbor (who spent $15,000 drilling a well last year) has a water level of 50 ppm (most municipal water systems test 100-200 ppm). I spent about $1,500 on this project including lumber and building materials to expand the pumping station.
