I have been using an electric heating pad for about 20 years. The few I've had over the years have all been plastic, with simple temperature controls and a heating pad mounted to the bottom of the pot. They worked well enough but decided to buy one that looked a little better in our kitchen. As I only use it myself I wanted a smaller one and this 1.2 liter Courant fits really well. I read a lot of reviews and came to the conclusion that not many people have anything bad to say about this model and it seems to have higher ratings than most. It heats up fairly quickly, but maybe not as quickly as those I've used in the past. The additional features of this device make it better than before. The cordless design is good, as is the auto shut off when the water boils. I've only had it for a week or two and so far it's working perfectly. I concluded that while older units had temperature control, the truth is I just want the water for my morning tea to boil as quickly as possible. This device has proven to be a good buy.
