I do a lot of things, my favorite is making bags and bags. I had a problem with my regular machine and figured I should get a backup. Since my regular machine, Brother, isn't designed for heavy sewing, I figured I should look for a machine that could penetrate multiple layers of fabric and join the batting more easily. Of course I really wanted a Juki, but I don't have $999 to buy it. So I looked at cheaper cars. I almost bought the Brother Heavy Duty but the Singer 4452 was rated slightly higher in reviews on various sites. I finished the bag with the machine once I opened the box and installed it. It's pretty basic but solid. It's a lot more powerful than my regular sewing machine and heavier, although not as reliable as the more expensive model. I had an issue where the needle refused to go through my pocket when trying to sew on the pen loops, which meant there were 6 layers of cotton fabric and 6 layers of padding (Shapeflex). I cranked the car manually and everything was fine, but of course I was disappointed. I don't need a leather or denim machine as I don't work with that material. Keep in mind that I still consider myself a novice. I've only been sewing for about 5 years and this is my second machine. I love my brother so I wanted to make sure I wasn't using and abusing another machine designed for this purpose. I really don't like that there is no cruise control. I would appreciate it. I don't feel that the need for a high-performance machine means you still don't need finesse. I had a hard time getting used to using the foot pedal for precise speed control, so I can say I'll spin the flywheel a lot. I will learn to control the speed with the pedal in practice. Overall I am very happy that I bought this machine. It fits my budget and works well for what I need. He is powerful, fast and strong. Doesn't wobble at all, even at full speed, which is impressive considering I use a folding chart table for sewing. I would recommend this car to those who cannot afford anything more expensive. Until I can afford my $999 40p Juki I will happily use my Singer Heavy Duty 4452.
