This is the best cone I've ever used for a pet after surgery. It is 3 rings of foam, covered separately with fabric. This allows the cone to bend toward the head, or backward while the pet is eating or drinking. As you can see, it is so soft it actually serves as a pillow while resting. It has a drawstring to adjust the size around the neck, but I replaced it with a band of elastic after our other puppy chewed the mechanism that controls the drawstring. It seems a border terrier puppy wouldn't need a size XL, but that is what we bought, and it ended up being just about the right size. It definitely prevented him from being able to lick or bite on any part of him body, but almost touched the ground. Not sure what size dog would wear the small - maybe a tea cup chihuahua? I read the reviews about size, which helped me make the right decision. This is a great cone!
