Some records need it, some don't.
The sound of vinyl records depends on the iron. You may have a specific record or expensive needle pen. I calculated that the extra weight in the middle of a record could help 80% of my record collection (edit - I originally thought only 20% of my records would sound better). You can buy different records, leather or rubber mats or add records to match the record you are playing or whatever. Experiment! Weight helps with certain records, about 80% of my collection. This degrades the sound for others. It's nice to have 80% for it.
