I purchased ammonia from James Austin Co. for use in freshwater aquariums with no fish. Beneficial bacteria for the nitrogen cycle consume ammonia. In the past I have used a store bought bottle of "clear" ammonia. It worked great until it was used up in a glass cleaning project. There's a big difference between an old bottle and James Austin stuff. The amount needed to bring a gallon of fresh water to 0.5 ppm ammonia was 3 drops. The old bottle took almost a tablespoon (+10ml)! This bottle feeds a lot more bacteria for biological filtration. And it contains no surfactants. I'll put some in a dropper bottle for easy dosing. I use the Freshwater Master API test kit - the ammonia test works great with this ammonia. Excellent material!
