Covers the lens for protection, but the neoprene parts rub against each other and create resistance that makes it difficult to adjust the zoom ring. I could try trimming part of the zoom ring, but then the lens seams would be more exposed. In the end I just took the whole piece off. The version I bought in black for my Sigma 70-200 didn't have this problem. And just a note, if you store your lenses in foam trays or in matching cases, you may need to remove part of the lens hood for storage.
