I bought these because I saw Shari Carroll's tutorial video on You Tube where you can use a smaller area of the ink pad (compared to larger ones) Apply ink directly to stamps and have more control over where you can apply different colors and I was blown away by how well it came out. I've tried printing stamps with large ink pads, but the opacity was never good enough. I think the secret was how she sprinkled a little bit of water on the image before stamping it. This gave everything a very nice watercolor effect, but the image seemed to have enough clarity to see the stamped image really well. I think this technique works with certain types of stamps, but maybe not all. In this case, they (and I) used a Winter Tree Stamp from Hero Arts.
