We have three beautiful babies aged 6, 3 and 4 months and are expecting our fourth. Our third and fourth children will be Irish twins less than 10 months apart. I needed a place to keep my 4 month old baby safe while I was cooking dinner or sweeping and this seemed like a good solution. Before buying I had my eye on the Joovy Room 2, a breeze from 4mums (plus?) and a boxy, big competitor from Graco. I needed something more than the standard package and games as with three children and a fourth traveling the little ones need their own safe space partly to keep them at home but also to keep the older ones out. ADVANTAGES: - The price is very attractive. - The quality doesn't look cheap, the seams are sewn well. - However, the husband could assemble in seconds with one hand. I wasn't, but after he showed me I was able to set it up in seconds. It's machine washable! Our 4 month old spat it out a few days after first installing it and I put it in our washing machine (front loading, high efficiency) on the gentle cycle. I placed it upside down on the frame to dry overnight. No stains and clean results - Large playing surface - Light weight. It's so light I highly recommend taking it to our Thanksgiving and Christmas family gatherings so I have a place to (safely) put my baby. He has a door! I don't use the door but our two older children love being able to join a kid in a 'kids prison'. You know the rules: careful, don't jump, and only if I'm in the room. The child is easy to entertain and is SAFE. CONS: The ground is not soft. This is both a blessing and a curse. When we had to use the playing surface on our parquet floor, it was exhausting to put blankets on the playing surface. However, a soft ground would make it much heavier and not make it easier to move. I'm only deducting 1 star for the lack of content. This makes it difficult to use on hardwood floors with young children. The floor is not waterproof. I mention this just for the sake of form, as it doesn't really matter. We had a playground in the backyard and I put a waterproof picnic blanket or just a tarp underneath. It worked great. Two days after we got the play area, we had a professional cleaning of our living room (the only carpeted room in the house) and that left us without using our family room! Within 2 days of the carpet drying and the Scotchguard curing, we pushed the dining table aside and were hanging out in the dining room on rainy summer days. However, our hardwood floors prompted me to spread two thick blankets on the playground to provide our son with some padding. I've seen reviews of people putting foam sheets on the playground, which could work really well in place of blankets, although it would make the whole thing less portable. My dad suggested making a foam mattress topper *UNDER* the playpen so the floor would be a lot softer for the baby. Maybe we'll do that sometime. However, since we don't use it on concrete, I totally agree with the bottom part in combination with the ceiling. It also makes cleaning easier. Our son was able to crawl easily (at 4 months!) both on the ceiling and on the turquoise floor of the playground. He also fell asleep easily in the gaming arena and even once pressed his face against the net (pictured). The description states that the lining (mesh and bottom) is removable and machine washable. However, in answer to one of the questions, the seller indicates that it is impossible to wash in a typewriter. I'm not sure if that's true or not, but I washed it a few days after receiving the playpen and it's held up great. Also, for the record, I would like to point out that the security descriptor also advises against laying out blankets in the playground. We chose to ignore it. I would like to offer some advice to parents whose infant/toddler does not like the "kids' prison". Start by taking your baby there and play with him on the playground. Approach the gate slowly, but keep the gate open. Then move a little further. Provide an attractive playground! We have toys that are ONLY in the arena. They stay there, so they're "exclusive" toys, and that gives the playground a certain appeal. That way he knows it's not a punishment and that I'm not "running away" every time he's on the playground. Yesterday I left our baby in there for 20 minutes while I sat a few feet away and talked to him. He was happy and didn't feel abandoned. Talk to your baby too. I'll move the playground to our kitchen (it's big) while I cook dinner or canning. He's safe at the playground and I'm talking to him. He's happy and safe and I don't have to take care of him. Win. Also, if you show your child that playing on the playground isn't so bad, they won't feel abandoned. And buy yourself really brief moments of freedom to go to the bathroom or play a game with older kids. This is a very useful result for all parents. Of course, you shouldn't leave your child in this playpen for long periods of time, but for cat naps and short periods of time like cooking dinner or sweeping floors, this is the perfect spot for your child. Our son lies on his stomach most of the time, so we don't have a problem when a swing or lounge chair can create a "flat" spot on the back of his head. The playpen gives the baby the opportunity to spend time on the stomach and strengthen the neck muscles.
