Like others, I struggled to get the Subaru into "programming mode". I called wireless car starter locksmiths and installers in my area. Nobody programs key fobs and the retailer is too expensive. Eventually on a whim I tried the steps again but made sure I opened the door FOREVER and it worked! Using door lock/unlock to program wireless remote controls is not bad. Once I got my Forester into programming mode, it was a breeze. I've programmed both fobs and have excellent range for unlocking my doors. I can unlock my car through the supermarket car park! The keychains are well made and feel good in the hand (unlike the shiny plastic originals). If you need a key fob and want to try your Forester's self-programming mode, you'll be delighted.
